vacation and back again

So I updated the dog blog with Rowdy’s adventures. What I did not post was the incredible time Joe and I had with each other. After 25 years you would think we would run out of things to say, not so. We talked, laughed, rested and spent quality time dressed and otherwise. So I strongly recommend taking time for the one person that should be the center of your universe. We get so caught up in the to do’s and should do’s and must meet withs that we sometimes forget to just be. So anyone reading this –  take time to just be. It does not have to be at a fantastic location that does not have cell service or wifi like we were lucky enough to have. Anywhere will do.   My challenge to you is to turn off all electronics at least for  a day and enjoy the person sitting next to you.

Austin Public Library’s 2nd Chance Books

Through my position at the Austin Public Library I was able to start a library program for incarcerated youth here in Austin. The program limped along for several years then Austin Public hired a fabulous librarian that has taken the program and made it soar. These young people have opened me up in a way I never imagined. Because of this opportunity I now have the confidence to teach literacy classes, and workshops to help others reach out to these kids.   There is another program like this one in Lafayette La that was started by one of our interns and we have shown hundreds of adults how important these kids are.  This is where my heart lives. If you have never reached out to a young person who needs a real friend I recommend it. It feeds your soul

Bloody good time

So I wanted to write this morning and last night did not have anything to do with my ugly dog so. Last night I saw Austin’s Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. What a treat. The set was done by the love of my life Joe so it was a requirement to attend. But I am so happy I did the show was to use my overrated word that everyone hates AMAZING. Shock and awe peeps. I said something very pretentious last night that I stand behind. This show is for smart people who do not take themselves seriously. The kind of people I like to surround myself with. So yay I hope all my friends get to see it. If it ever comes near you give yourself a treat and go see it.

Squash love

So last night was the puppet incident and it was a great success. I offered a piece that we called calabeza de amore. It was a Spanish soap opera using garden vegetables. You see what happened was when Diego Squash met Maria he fell head over heals in love so they married. BUT he was not a good man he could not satisfy her in the ways of love so she sought solace outside the marriage with his best-friend Jesus Pear. When she got pregnant there were suspicions but when the babies were born and looked just like pears Diego called out to the heavens to help him get his revenge. At this point the puppeteer picked up the pear and ate him….It worked, I just sometimes wonder if other people see vegetables as a vehicle for drama. Or is it only me….

Either way it was a blast could not have happened without Chris Owens, Caroline Reck and Ben Cunningham.. Wow what talented people that don’t mind making a fool of themselves for fun and profit. I love puppetry.
